Simple Pots: Porcelain Teabowls by Kim

Teabowls can serve a variety of functions such as every day beverage vessels and small serving bowls. Recently many people have become interested in tea drinking and tea ceremonies. In its simpliest form, a tea ceremony serves the purpose of helping us to slow down and become more immediately present in the moment. You can ritualize your tea drinking by conducting a simple tea ceremony as follows:
  • Thoughtfully steep a pot of tea.
  • Place within sight an object of beauty for contemplation (perhaps a vase and stem of flowers).
  • Take a moment of silence to honor the tea, simple beauty, and peace.
  • Allow your mind and body to become one in the present moment.

I make porcelain tea bowls for every day use. The process of making an individual tea bowl always leads me to a place of sensitivity to and appreciation for their simplicity of form. They are always a joy to throw and while throwing, I hold in mind the sacredness of their function. As an informally trained American potter, I make no attempt at cultural appropriation. While there are stylistic similarities, these tea bowls are not intended to represent classic Asian forms.
