Doug's Cichlid Page!

Welcome to my home page

As you may have noticed, this webpage is about  fish. Specifically the Central & South American tropical fish of Cichlids. Here you will find links on my link page to many popular sites for just such fish, and others as well. Aquariums and large cichlids are one of my hobbies, along with weightlifting, diving, bikeriding.  I have been into aquariums for 15 years or more.  I  have 45 gallon tank with a  6 inch gold Jaguar Cichlid,  and a Plecostomus. The big colorful cichlids are my main and almost only interest as far as fish go, although I am considering perhaps a smaller tank or two with something other than just these big monsters. Besides the fact that these big guys need big tanks which unfortunately  are expensive and not always easy to find a place for. Please note that my reason for this page is to express my avid fascination for these beautiful big cichlids and to show others about these big cichlids and their unique personalities.
                                              Cichlisoma Managuenses  Also known as
"Managua Cichlid"
                                                             "Jaguar Cichlid"
                                                              "Aztec Cichlid"
It is the third largest fish in the Cichlisoma genus obtaining an awesome 20  inches in length. Temperment: Exstremely aggressive and territorial. Requires alot of room and will not tolerate intruders.
Not a community fish for most tanks.
Minimum tank size: 60+ gallons preferably 100-150  for full size.
Foods:  Live, beefheart, pellets, almost anything.  They will  readily take beefheart and live food.

I have found that if they are used to pellets it may take a day of not feeding them in  order to get them to take beefheart, but once they do their hooked!  Also beefheart is preferable to live foods as it is cheaper in the longrun, and can be frozen and pieces chopped  up for feeding, not to mention the fact their is no threat of aquatic disease or parasites. I have found that in my tank keeping the temperature on the low side of its preferred temp range helps keep  its aggressive nature curbed just slightly.

                                      Aequidens Rivulatus "Green Terror"
Size: 8-12 inches depending on species
                                       Temperment: Very aggressive and territorial
                                       Minimum tank size: 60 gallons
Foods:  Live, beefheart, pellets, almost anything.  They will  readily take beefheart and live food.
Another big beautiful Cichlid who has earned the name and one
I hope to aquire soon someday along with the tank to put him in!

Finally, the King of all Cichlids, Cichlisoma Dovii  the WOLF CICHLID! Also known in spanish as GuapoteBlanco, or as the Indians call it, Laguneros or "Large Fish" This is the  second largest of the Cichlids right next to the Peacock Bass Cichlid which attains a 36 inch length, (so far the largest of the cichlids that I know of). Wolf cichlid males getting to a daunting 30 inches in length, females 24 inches. These monsters are afraid of nothing and will decimate any fish in the tank.  They are found along portions of the Atlantic and Pacific slopes of Honduras  and Costa Rica.
As with all larger cichlids they are diggers and will make huge pits in the gravel in the tank.
Temperment: The MOST aggressive of cichlids woud be the best way to describe them.
Food: Anything- beefheart & live preferable

Finally I have been able to post a pic of my 45 gallon tank and 6 inch Gold Jaguar cichlid. I have just acquired a 20 gallon Hex aquarium which is also now up and running. Its new occupant is a four inch Texas Cichlid.
As of this December of 1999 I have now acquired yet another tank, my 3rd now. This one a 35+ gallon hex, to which I have moved my Texas cichlid into and he is much happier, along with him I have added a 4-5 inch Sailfin Marbled catfish that seems to be doing well and eats like a pig!

There have been  fish in this tank.
