The Big Mountain Unofficial Ski Report

Nov. 18 (Monday)
Temperature: 20 Something
Base: Enough
Summit: More than enough
New Snow: Big flakes and lots of em'

Ok, sports fans, (little Great Santini interlude) we have snow. The Big Mountain was open last weekend for a brief teaser with Chair 3 in operation. Once again I repeat, a brief teaser. It was a good time to shake the cobwebs off the skis, clean the dead rodents out of the boots, and get in touch with the zen of carving.

Now for the real report....hiking....is it worth the trip? Darn Toot 'in! (Spoken in the familiar Norwegian slang made popular by the movie Fargo) Today was filled with consistent snow (except when you get too close to the snow guns) and good coverage. The turns came back into place on Big Face with no rocks hitting the bases, poles, arms, etc... Today was a reminder that for the deep, you need the steep. Kicking the skis to the next carve was pure pleasure, which combined with other fluid moments, produced a big *%$# eating grin.

So here is the scoop. Permission has been granted to The Big Mtn. to open chair 7 on the backside this weekend. However, I have no idea what the plans are for skiing the front side. Tall weeds and small firs are still poking out, but as stated before, there were no scrapes to the skis.

Now for a short personal interlude. Have you ever thought the people we are most grateful for we seldom, if never see. For example, the early risers that blaze the upward trial. We have all had to stomp through thigh high snow, and we have also felt the same relief from established footprints. I therefore toast my favorite 12 oz. beverage in the direction of the morning person.

Have a good one....Jeff
