FLATHEAD COUNTY GAZETTEER



Much of the following information was compiled from the "Registers of Appointments of Postmasters," provided by the National Archives. All communities were a part of the original Flathead County. Many of the locations are now in Lincoln and Lake counties. Feel free to e-mail me with contributions. (Please include sources of information for verification.)

Ashley: One of the older communities of the valley. Situated on Ashley Creek, west of what is now Kalispell. Named for Joe Ashley, Flathead pioneer. First houses were built by A. S. Lanneau and Andrew Swaney in 1884.
Apgar: Early settlement on Lake McDonald. First postmaster was Jessie A. Apgar.
Atlanta: Post office established in 1903, vath John J. Hibbard as postmaster. Located west of Kalispell in the Pleasant Valley area. On the Great Northem Railway 57 miles west of Kalispell.
Batavia: Six miles west of Kalispell.
Bear Creek: Sixty-eight miles east of Kalispell on Great Northern.
Belton: Post office established in 1892 with Joseph Clark as postmaster. Believed to have been named "Bell's Town" or "Belton" for Daniel Webster Bell who took up a claim near the townsite at the time of the construction of the Great Northem Railway and cut ties for the railroad. He was a Civil War veteran and served as cook for the location parties of the railroad in 1890. Great Northern built station of rustic design in 1909 at a cost of $10,000. Name was changed to West Glacier in 1949.
Big Arm: Located on west shore of Flathead Lake. Post office established in 1911 with Marion F. Lamb as postmaster. See Elmo.
Bigfork: Located on Swan River and Flathead Lake. Post office established in 1901 with Everit L. Sliter postmaster. Original site of the University of Montana Biological Station.
Chautauqua: Post office established in 1901 John J. Stoner as postmaster. Eighteen miles south Kalispell on west shore of Flathead Lake. Later known as Stoner and now as Lakeside.
Clifford: Post office was established in 1888, w John E. Clifford as postmaster. Name changed Demersville in 1889.
Columbia Falls: Post office established July 1891, with James Kennedy as postmaster. Located the west end of Bad Rock Canyon, fifteen mi northeast of Kalispell. Name was originally Columbus, but changed to Columbia Falls to avoid confusion with Columbus, Montana.
Coram: Post office established in 1914, with John Crossthwaite as postmaster. Twenty-one miles east Kalispell.
Creston: Post office established in 1894, with Charles L.Buck as postmaster. Twelve miles southeast Kalispell. Named by the Buck family after Creston Iowa.
Daly's Spur: Twelve miles east of Kalispell on the Great Northern.
Dayton: Post office established in 1893, with Clare E. Proctor as postmaster. Located on the west shore Flathead Lake.
Demersville: Located on the Flathead River. Founded by T. J. Demers in 1887. Post office established 1892, with John E. Clifford as postmaster.
Duncan: Settlement adjoining Kalispell on the northeast side.
Echo: Post office established in 1901, with William Kelsy as postmaster. Across the Flathead River and southeast of Kalispell.
Egan: Post office established in 1888, with Jesse Yenne as postmaster. Across the Flathead River and to the east of Demersville, about four miles.
Elmo: Post office established in 1911, vath Aaron A. Stuckman as postmaster. On the west shore of Flathead Lake. Named after the old Indian "Elemo." Elmo was to be name of town where Big Arm now is. Entry on maps got mixed. Thus, Big Arm is on side arm of Flathead Lake while Elmo is on the end of arm.
Essex: Post office established in 1898, with William W. Glazier as postmaster. Fifty-seven miles northeast of Kalispell.
Eudora: Post office established in 1912, with Printha Troutwine as postmistress. Mail service discontinued in 1919 and transferred to Elmo.
Fielding: Post office established in 1909, with Joseph J. Cremans as postmaster. Near Essex.
Fisher: Settlement adjoining Kalispell on the south west side.
Fisher River: Located seventy-two miles west of Kalispell.
Flathead Lake: Originally called Scribner. Post office established November 25, 1873.
Fortine: Post office established in 1905, with Claude C. Bradley as postmaster. Logging community north of Whitefish. Named for Octave and Phillip Fortine who homesteaded on meadow where Ant Flats Ranger Staton is located.
Garry: Post office established in 1923, with James E. Beardsley as postmaster. Mail service transferred to Nyack in 1923.
Glacier: Post office established in 1909, with Olive Lewis as postmistress. Name was changed to Lake McDonald in 1913.
Glen: Post office established in 1898, with William J. Bohannon as postmaster. Thirty-eight miles south of Kalispell on the east shore of Flathead Lake.
Half Moon: Post office established in 1890. Originally known as Hill.
Harrisburg: Post office established in 1903, with Claude C. Bradley as postmaster. Name changed to Fortine in 1905.
Hill: Post office established in 1890, with John P. Bowen as postmaster. Mail service transferred to Columbia Falls in 1893. Later called Half Moon.
Holt: Post office established on June 11, 1890, with Eugene C. Sears as postmaster. Located close to the mouth of the Flathead River. Named for Joe Holt, early-day resident. Originally called Lee's Landing. Mail service discontinued in 1908, reestablished, and finally discontinued in 1915. In 1886 Alvin Lee bought a ferry from Henry Therriault and used it two miles below Dooley's Landing to connect Ashley with new road on east side of Flathead River.
Hubbart: Post office established in 1905, with William E. Frederic as postmaster. Located at McGregor Flats near Marion. Named for W. F. Hubbart, manager of the Montana Cattle Company whose headquarters were at this location. Both Hubbart and A. M. Moore transported mail to and from Marion.
Hungry Horse: Post office established May 1, 1948, with Ellis 0. Strong as postmaster. Was government town during the time that the Bureau of Reconstruction built Hungry Horse Dam on the South Fork of the Flathead River.
Java: Sixty-one miles east of Kalispell on the Great Nothern.
Jennings: Post office established on Ocotber 8, 1892, with Andrew H. Wigen as postmaster. Located on the Kootenai River.
Jessup: Post office established in 1909, with Herbert Jessup as postmaster. Located close to Creston.
Kalispell: On June 6, 1890, Charles F. Harrigan was appointed postmaster at Kalispell, the original spelling with one final "I." Then he attempted to get the name changed to Harrigan which was done briefly on April 5 and then rescinded May 19. Joseph W. Conner appointed postmaster at Kalispell (two final "lls") on June 20 which was described as "formerly and now Kalispel because order of name chanqe was rescinded." Name changed again to one "I" on January 2, 1892.
Kila: Also known as Sedan, with H. C. Neffner as postmaster. Came into being in the final days of 1891. A big Great Northern contractor's camp was located there. It was named for William Kiley, but the "Kila" spelling was used because there was another "Kiley" post office in Montana.
Kintla: Post office was established in 1916, with Mary Schoenberger as postmistress. Located at Kintla Lake, Glacier National Park.
Lake City: Post office established on October 14, 1891, with Thomas Dobson as postmaster. Name changed to Troy in 1893.
Lake Five: Post office established in 1920, with Mrs. Margaret Gaffaney as postmistress. Near Belton.
Lake McDonald: Originally known as Glacier. Post ffice renamed in 1913.
Lakeside: Originally known as Chautauqua.
LaSalle: Post office established in 1900, with Walter Jellison as postmaster. Nine miles northeast of Kalispell. Once had two sawmills. Jellison ran a general merchandise store there.
Lee's Landing: Later named Holt.
Leona: Post office established in 1896, with Frank L. Stryker as postmaster. Located near Fortine.
Libby: Post office established on September 18, 1919 with Robert Cantwell as postmaster. Was also own as Libby Creek.
Lupfer: Post office established in 1917, with Hubert Harmon as postmaster.
Marion: Post office established in 1892, with Charles Mitchell as postmaster. Twenty-three miles west of Kalispell on the Great Northern.
Marston: Post office established in 1895, with Cyrus Marston as postmaster. In 1907 mail service was transferred to Fortine.
Martin City: Post-office established in 1947, with Mrs. Grace Zum as postmistress. Community established as the result of Hungry Horse Dam construction.
McCarthyville: Eight miles west of Marias Pass. Established by and named for Eugene McCarthy. In 1890 the population was 100, with six saloons, three restaurants, and one store.
Meadow: Post office established in 1901, with Charles H. Lynch as Postmaster. Changed to Pleasant Valley in 1903.
Milltown: A logging community near Fortine,
Mock: Post office established in 1921, with Peter B. Wiggen as postmaster. In 1939 mail service transferred to Stryker.
Monaco: Post office established on January 19, 1891, with James Kennedy as postmaster. Named changed to Columbia Falls in 1891. Post office was on Kennedy's ranch.
Montford: Post office established in 1900, with Arthur Y. Lindsey as postmaster. A country post office near the Flathead River, five miles east of Kalispell. Name may have been been made up to signify a "mountain ford."
Murray: Post office established in 1900, with Isaac Murray as postmaster. In 1900 mail service was transferred to Kalispell.
Nyack: Post office established in 1912, with George A. Robertson as postmaster. In 1942 mail service transferred to Belton. Forty-one miles east of Kalispell on the Great Northern.
Olney: Post office established in 1907, with Elizabeth M. Dickerhoof as postmistress. Discontinued in 1917 with mail service transferred to Whitefish. Reestablished in 1918.
Paola: Post office established in 1914, with Marie Cameron as postmistress. Discontinued in 1919 and later re-established. Finally discontinued in 1928 with mail service transferred to Essex.
Orchard Park: Settlement and suburb of Kalispell north of the fairgrounds.
Parkdale: Settlement on the Stillwater River opposite the Northwestern Saw Mill, one mile north of Kalispell.
Pleasant Valley: Post office established in 1903, with Charles A. Lynch as postmaster. Originally called Meadow. In 1935 mail service transferred to Marion. Polebridge: Post office established in 1920, with Benjamin F. Hansen as postmaster. Near the Canadian border in the North Fork country.
Polson: Post office established in 1898, with Henry Therriault as postmaster. Located at the south end of Flathead Lake. Started with a population of 14.
Proctor: Post office established in 1910, with Clarence E. Proctor as postmaster. Located on the west shore of Flathead Lake.
Rexford: Post office established in 1903, with William C. Fewkes as postmaster. Located on the Kootenai River.
Richland: Post office established on June 30, 1892, with William H. Orr as postmaster. Located two and one-half miles west of Pleasant Valley.
River: Post office established in 1900, with Martin Coulin as postmaster. In 1901 mail service was, transferred to LaSalle.
Rollins: Post office established in 1904, with Rhenault A. Rollins as postmaster. Located on the west shore of Flathead Lake.
Ronan: Post office established in 1894, with Ludger C. Twott as postmaster. Named for Peter Ronan.
Scribner: Post office established on February 20. 1872, with Angus McLeod as postmaster. Named changed to Flathead Lake on November 25, 1873.
Sedan: See Kila.
Selish: Post office established on December 5. 1881 with John G. Dooley as postmaster. Originally known as Dooley's Landing, near Therriault Ferry on the Flathead River (the west side). "Honest John" Dooley first saw Selish in the fall of 1880 when accompanied by the guide, Jack Fisher.
Sheldon: Post office established on January 30, 1887, with Sarah Sheldon as postmistress. Eight miles northeast of Kalispell. In 1888 Sheldon had a sawmill, store, hotel, butcher shop, and a saloon.
Snyder: Post office established in 1905, with George E. Snyder as postmaster. In 1909 name was changed to Glacier.
Somers: Post office established in 1901, with John H. Sawyer as postmaster. The milltown built by the John O'Brien Lumber Company and named for George O. Somers, an official of the Great Northern Railway.
Stryker: Post office established in 1902, with Frank S. Stryker as postmaster.
Summit: Great Northern made the crossing of the Rockies at this point. Seventy-five miles northeast of Kalispell.
Swan: Post office established in 1904, with Emmett Swan as postmaster. Name changed to Marion in 1906.
Swan Lake: Post office established in 1915, with Albert K. Millett as postmaster. Discontinued in 1960.
Sylvanite: Post office established in 1895, with Cyrus C. Marston as postmaster. In 1903 mail service was transferred to Troy.
Tobacco (Tobacco Plains): Post office established in 1894, with John C. Leonard as postmaster. In 1903 mail service was transferred to Eureka. In 1880 a Mr. J. Ewart said Tobacco Plains was so-named because of kinnikinnick growing there.
Trail Creek: Post office established in 1921, with Benjamin D. Price as postmaster. Mail service transferred to Polebridge in 1954.
Trego: Named, according to local folklore, when construction crews were clearing trees and laying railroad tracks for the Great Northern. One lone tree stood in the path of the rock cut. When the tree was dynamited and rose into the air, a construction crewman shouted, "Look at the t-r-e-e-g-o!" Hence, Trego.
Troy: Post office established on May 3, 1893, with Henry L. Tatom as postmaster. Located on the Kootenai River 110 miies northwest of Kalispell, Originally named Lake City.
Ural: Post office established in 1905, with Oscar Gibbler as postmaster, Discontinued in 1959. Located on the Kootenai River.
West Glacier: Prior to October 1, 1949, known as Belton.
Whitefish: Post office established in 1903, with John E, Skyles as Postmaster. Became the division Point of the Great Northern in 1904.
Woods Bay: Post office established in 1950. Located on the east shore of Flathead Lake.
Yakt: Post office established in 1920, with Phoebe Lang as postmistress.
