The Undercard

" Julio Cesar Chavez combines a superstar presence with an almost superhuman ability to take a punch. Undefeated in 73 fights (with 60 KOs), Chavez has captured everyone and everything placed before him, including four crowns, and innumberable accolades, including universal acceptance as the best "Pound-for-Pound" fighter in boxing today....

But his opponent tonight, John Duplessis, is no slouch either. Fighting mostly as a lightweight, he has a 35-1 record, with 25 KOs. Turning pro in '84, he went undefeated in his first 27 bouts, his only loss coming on points to Louie Lomeli on June 12, 1988. He came back to knock out Joe Celestine and Tunde Foster, among others.

And now he poses yet another hurdle for Julio Cesar Chavz, as Chavez continues to make his claim for Best in the World - as well as one of the all-time greats."

" Simon Brown is the best unknown champion in boxing today, rated by Boxing Illustrated as the 7th-best "Pound-for-Pound" boxer in the world - right behind Mike Tyson. And yet Brown's bright light has been hidden for most of his 10 year career, eclipsed in part by more celebrated boxers.

And by the fact that he is but one of two welterweight champions from the Washington, D.C. suburb of Germantown, Maryland.

The other welterweight champion from Germantown is Brown's long-time friend, Maurice Blocker, (32-1) who took the WBC crown from Marlon Starling last August.

Which is what makes this match-up even more unusual. For it is a rare occurrence for two friends to face each other in the ring...."
