What's New

16 December 1999

Konley Lights added. A sampling of the outdoor lights displays on upper Konley Drive, west of Kalispell.

5 May 1999

Flathead Flood & High Water Page updated with (a) link to realtime streamflow for the Flathead River, and (b) graph of the high water of 1997 showing the influence of weather (temperature) on the runoff.

17 March 1999

Reorganized and updated the Flathead Flood & High Water Page in preparation for the spring runoff of 1999. As time permits, I will add photographs, including photographs from the floods of 1997.

13 January 1999

Revised the Flathead From Space page, and granted universal permission to use the copyrighted images. Enjoy.

3 January 1999

The North Fork Coal Mining Information Center is back in operation. The pages will be updated whenever possible. Please note that the NFCMIC is a wholly volunteer operation, and that I receive no compensation for my efforts.

16 September 1998

The North Fork Coal Mining Information Center has been removed from this site under duress.

17 July 1998

Commencing August, 1998, the Flathead Flood & High Water Web will be retired. The Flathead Flood & High Water Page and the North Fork Coal Mining Information Center have been moved to this site. The Flathead Lake TMDL pages will hosted by the Flathead Lakers, a nonprofit group dedicated to high water quality for Flathead Lake and it's catchment basin.

03 November 1997

The Flathead from Space page is now complete, and contains links to NASA. These are the best views yet of the Flathead Valley.

01 October 1997

I've begun applying the lighter, brighter, spectrum color scheme to all major pages. This is taking longer than I anticipated as I'm also applying a new color scheme to the outside of my house ("Silver Birch" siding, white trim, purple commentary).

29 September 1997

The Home Page has been redesigned and simplified for quicker loading and easier navigation.

27 September 1997

Public Policy Links has been reduced from three to two frames --- and may well be deframed when I get the time to make the changes.

24 September 1997

Public Policy Links is up and operational.

Wicked Gradients, a series of color gradients designed to test the color range of your color printer, has been added to Graphics Tips.

The Flathead from Space, a collection of my enhancements of photographic images made from the space shuttles, is up in beta form. Coming soon, a tutorial on using Adobe Photoshop to improve aerial images.

Wild Walks, the temporary web site home for the Flathead Chapter of the Montana Wilderness Association, is moving.

The site has undergone a significant rennovation (with more to come), so please let me know if there are broken links.

18 August 1997

Graphics Tips is operational, although the content is minimal. I could not resist posting an example of what one should not do with Photoshop and high powered plug-ins. Eye Candy 3.01 arrived today and I was experimenting. Please note that not all of the navigation tables have been updated.

Significant changes to the site's design. Lightened the background image slightly, changed the page headline scheme, and provided new navigation table at the end of most pages. Repaired the links on this page. (What happened? Inattention to detail, that's what. When I recently reorganized the directories on the site, I forgot to repair the links on this page.)

17 August 1997

Redesigned the home page for a cleaner, more understated look. Red hot web designers will hate it, but content seekers who prefer simplicity and fast loading should be pleased.

29 June 1997

Made formatting adjustments to increase page margins, repaired links on main Glacier NP page, and added one photograph of a human (it's up to you to find it).

22 June 1997

Home Page for the Flathead Chapter of the Montana Wilderness Association added. The page includes links to other elements of MWA, Wilderness Walks in NW Montana for 1997, and the FCMWA's newsletter. I'm hosting the site until fall, when it will move to a permanent location.

High Water page modifications. All links remain, as does the essay on the effect of Hungry Horse Dam. The photo essays on flooding along Ashley Creek and the mainstem Flathead have been retired until next year.

11 June 1997

Northwest Montana Wilderness Walks. Each summer, the Montana Wilderness Association's members and staff sponsor a series of hikes in special areas of Montana. I've listed the hikes in Northwest Montana and provided some links.

Added photographs of flowers, and made minor adjustments on several pages.

02 June 1997

Glacier NP. Added the Mixing Parks and Politics page, and a reputed photograph of a black helicopter snooping over the park on a sacred national holiday.

23 May 1997

Astrophotos. Major upgrade of this section, which has been renamed. Added three more sets of Hale-Bopp images, two sets of Hyakutake images, and links to several outstanding sites on astronomy.

Home Page. Minor changes providing a cleaner appearance.

21 May 1997

Effects of Hungry Horse Dam (179K). Revised analysis, with additional graphs. I now believe that without the dam, the water would have hit 17.6 to 17.9 feet at Columbia Falls.

Mainstem Flathead (214K). Deactivated page. New photographs showing the peak of 17 May and how much the water had receded by late afternoon on 19 May. I'll provide thumbnails in the next update of this page so that it loads more rapidly.

High Water Page. Added a link for the After a Disaster series of publications, and slightly reorganized the links.

I also added intrasite navigational links on several pages.

20 May 1997

Essays. Added op-ed piece on reconstructing two backcountry chalets in Glacier National Park.

Glacier NP. Added links to commentary on the general management plan and reconstruction of Sperry and Granite Park Chalets.

High Water Page. The link to current streamflows for the Jocko River now takes you there instead of to the Perma readings for the Flathead. On the Effects of Hungry Horse Dam page, I added information on sources and graphing software, and cleaned up a few typos. On the Mainstem Flathead page, I added a locator map for folks from afar.

19 May 1997

High Water Page. Links expanded, reorganized, and annotated. Added links to current streamflow reports for the Kootenai, Fisher, Thompson, Yaak, and Jocko Rivers, the North Fork Flathead at Polebridge, the Middle Fork Flathead at Essex, and the mainstem Flathead at Perma.

Effect of Hungry Horse Dam (129K because of graphs) on flooding of the mainstem Flathead River. Regression analysis suggests that the dam prevented a major flood over the weekend.

16 May 1997

Glacier National Park. Images of Glacier from the author's private collection, and listing of pages on the management plan and backcountry chalets.

Essays. The unabridged text of two op-ed articles on Glacier, complete with notes on the articles.

14 May 1997

High Water Page. Links to peak flow forecasts, snowpack data, Flathead Lake and Kerr Dam data, weather data from Glacier International Airport, the MSU flood page, and updated, extended, and revised links to sites on the Red River Flood (some of the old links were defective).

Mainstem Flathead Page. Deactivated page. A never before seen graph of the mean daily streamflows for four major floods and a current photograph of the river on the rise.

12 May 1997

High Water Page. Links to realtime streamflow data for local streams and rivers, links to practical information for coping with flooding, and several links to Red River flood sites.

Ashley Creek Page. Deactivated page. Peak flows historical data from the long discontinued gauging station in Smith Valley, a map of the Ashley Creek drainage downstream from Smith Lake to Kalispell, and images of the flooding including a color panorama taken from Lone Pine State Park.
