Late in March, the comet was visible in the west shortly after sunset. Apart from allowing me to rise at a decent hour in the morning, this development allowed me to photograph Hale-Bopp against the Salish Mountains west of the Flathead. I used a variety of lenses and Ektachrome Elite II 400 pushed one stop. The most interesting image showed both the comet and rivers of light from headlights and taillights. This image was made using a 105mm f/2.5 lens and a 30-second exposure. |

Switching to the 35mm f/2.0 lens, I captured the comet and the horizon with another 30-second exposure. ![]() |
