What's New

By the middle of March, observing conditions in the Flathead were improving, and the comet was brightening beautifully. I rose at 0400 and shot two rolls of film (Kodak Ektachrome Elite II 400 pushed to 800, and Fujicolor 800 color negative film) through several lenses. The images below were made using the Ektachrome (it was easier to scan, as it didn't require wrestling with the strip film holder) and 200mm f/3.5 and 35mm f/2.0 lenses.

Star trails are prominent in this 30-second exposure with the 200mm lens.

The image below, made with the fast 35mm lens, is the one that my nephew likes. He observed that the image above could have been taken from a million miles out in space, but that this image, with the dawn illuminated clouds showing in the lower right, connects the comet to Earth.
