(This is almost what my new 82 T-tops
looks like)
The fifth and most recent Monte
I've bought is my 1982 T-top!
It has had quite a bit of work
done to it in the past. But still does
need a little fixing up.
But it looks really good! I paid $300.00
and my .38 cal pistol for it.
It is sweet and I hope to be driving it
soon. It has no motor
and tranny, but I am thinking of dropping in my
350 and 2004R tranny.
All I need is for the guy to either get the title
or file for a lost title.
I have always wanted a T-top and I just couldn't
resist buying it! It
even has a Grant GT steering wheel and 4 really
good tires on it! I lucked
out! Check it out on the T-tops page!
It's gonna take some attention
and some time, but it will be sweet!
s
The
first Monte Carlo I've bought was my white 1978 with red interior.
It
was my second car and was in real good shape. It still is!
I paid
$425.00
for it. A Steal considering the tranny lasted six years. (It
was
behind
the 400 small block in my 81 Monte for five years.) The motor
was
a stock 305 and ran really good, but it is deceased now!
I
ran a 229 V-6 out of my 1980 Malibu in it for a bit.
(That
motor has been in three of my cars and still runs!)
The
car now sits in my back yard and waits for it's resurrection!
The
second Monte Carlo I've bought was my 1981. I paid $900.00
for
her. It's maroon with maroon interior(kinda rare)! It had a
229cid
V6
in it that barely pulled it down the road. When the V6 died I
brought
out the beast within and put in a small block 400 bored .030
over
with an RV cam! Can you say Holly $#!&? I loved tearin'
up the
streets
with her! It had so much torque that the frame cracked
behind
the drivers side rear wheel well. I could light em up and the
whole
back end of the car would bounce up and down off the ground.
It
made cool little black skip marks on the pavement! :) I went
through
so many tires I can't even count em all! In my opinion, the
Chevy
small block 400 is the most awesome motor Chevy has ever
produced!
What can I say, I love torque! The 400 was in the 81
for
five years(but is now in my brown 78)! The 81 is the very best
winter
set up I have ever had! I put four studded snow tires on
it
and two or three sand bags in the trunk and I was set!
I
used to pull trucks out of the ditch with it! And....this is Montana!
The
400 is (still) pushin' about 300 horsepower or maybe a bit more!
I
have taken out so many cars and trucks with my 81! It had a huge
reputation
as a total sleeper! She was my baby!
Too
bad she didn't look like she did the first day I got her! I had
less
than 100 miles on the car and I hit a deer the same day I bought
it.
The passenger front fender was bashed in and the door was
messed
up. I was mad! I drove her around like that for a while
and
then I was hit by an old guy! He took out my drivers side rear
quarter
panel. The money I received from his insurance company
was
used for the MIGHTY 400! So she looked like a beater
but
you better of thought twice...cause she could hold her own! :)
(I finally
broke the tranny that came out of my white 78 after five years.
I put
in the 350 tranny that my uncle and I built. That lasted about two
weeks.
I later
found out that the motor mounts were both broke and the motor was
moving
so much from the torque and the tranny just took a beating!
Anyway
I finally gave in and decided to put the 400in my brown 78 and
start
a differend project)! The 78 went through two trannys in less that
two
months,
and I wasn't even hard on em!
After
further investigation I found out that the flexplate was warped!
The
third Monte Carlo I've bought was my camel metallic brown 1978!
My
friend found it sitting in an alley behind a guys house! He told
me
about
it and we went to talk to the guy. We both pulled up to the
guy's
house in our Monte Carlo's! He was walking out of the house and
said,
"You Boys looking for a Monte Carlo to buy"? "Yes I said", knowing
I
was soon to become the proud owner of yet another Chevy Monte
Carlo!
He sold the car to me for $200.00. The best deal I have ever
had
on a car! He was the original owner. He custom ordered it in
1978.
It
is Dark camel metallic brown with a very nice light camel, or saddle
tan
vinyl interior. He had true dual exhaust put on in 1978. The
car
was,
and still is in awesome shape! It had 100,100 miles on the original
Buick
231cid V6. I towed it home, did a few things to it, and it ran and
drove
great! With only 105 horsepower it was kinda slow.....(but
still
fun to drive)! I put it up for sale for $1900.00 thinking I could
make
huge
profit from it! But Idecided that no profit is worth the car!
I put
18,000
miles on till the motor finally quit! A piston cracked in two
and
lodged in the cylinder! It was fun to take that motor apart!
I
couldn't have gotten a better deal!
I'll
probably keep it forever! I decided I wanted a beastly V8 for her!
She
has awesome potential, and was a great candidate for a mean
small
block Chevy power plant and some restoration!
So
I put my mighty 400 small block in and a different 350 tranny!
Oh
man.....It is like it was just meant to be!
My
78 and my 400 finally together....I knew It would happen eventually!
But
It has been through two trannys in two months.
I
don't know what is wrong, but it has to do with the way the
motor
is mounted in the car. Or the flex plate is bent or something!
The
400 is gonna come out for an inspection before another
tranny
goes in her! Hopefully I can get her done soon!
I
am having a tranny rebuilt and I will replace the flexplate.
I
am also gonna mount an external tranny cooler just because.
This
project is gonna require some attention and some cash!
The
fourth Monte Carlo I've bought was my 1985 SS(Super Sport).
These
legendary cars were built specially for NASCAR!
It
is silver with a maroon interior. I was so lucky to come upon this
treasure!
I paid $2000.00 for what has always been my dream car!
It
was in awesome shape! The interior was and still is immaculate!
There
is no cracks in the dashboard at all. No rips in the seats and
everything
has been very well taken care of. It was so hard to
believe
that the car had 158,000 miles on it! It still had the stock
High
Output 305 and 2004R tranny in it. It had headers and true dual
3
inch exhaust with flowmasters and no catalytic converters(SHHHH).
I
never thought a 305 could be so bad ass! It moved the car pretty
quickly!
I loved it but I knew the car needed more! I put a brand new
rebuilt
350 in her. She deserved it! The 350 is a 4 bolt main block,
is
bored .030 over, has 9.5:1 compression pistons, a Blue Racer RV
cam,
Edlebrock Performer RPM high rise intake manifold, and a 750cfm
Edlebrock
carb and chrome air cleaner! I have a set of FlowTech headers
to
replace the old Black Jack headers with. I hope to do something with
the
heads
soon. I want to take the 58cc crossfire heads from my H.O. 305 and
have
them machined to 2.02's with 58cc chambers. I've heared they kick
ass!
I left the 200 4R tranny in even though it had been making noise and
wanting
to blow since I bought the car! It lasted a good 7000 miles from
the
time
I bought the car and half of that was behind the 350. I guess I just
wanted
to see how long the old tranny could last. It was tough....but finally
snapped!
I have a newer TH350 with a shift kit ready to pop in whenever I
get
around to it! But I might end up putting
it in my 81 for the winter! She
has
awesome aluminum American Spirit 15x8 wheels and 235/60/R15
Firestone
Firehawk SS10 tires to hold her up! Oh.........I almost forgot
about
the stereo system! It has a Pioneer Mosfet 45Wx4 DEH-P2000
Super
Tuner III ECQ CD Deck! The amp is a little Rockford Fosgate 100
watter.
I left the stock front speakers in. But sitting in boxes in the back
seat
are two 6x9 Boston Acoustic 220 watt bad boys! Boston Acoustic
speakers
are so damn awesome! I do plan to build a better stereo system.
But
the motor and body of the car come first! UPDATE-I
just added
two
8 inch kicker subs in seperate boxes to my back seat! I connected
them
to the 6x9's, which are connected to the amp! It sounds damn
good
and has quite a bit of bass. But I wish I had two sets of preouts
on
my
stereo! I guess its time for a crossover! I
just borrowed the stereo to
put
in my brown 78 for some real tunes....and will probably put it in the 81
for
the
winter! The SS is gonna have to wait till spring to be driven again
anyway!
Unfortunately,
I wrecked my SS. I ran it into a guard rail showing off to a
girl!
I think it was worth it though. It kinda brought her and I closer
together!
But, that's a different story! She loves my car too(who wouldn't)!
I
bashed her up pretty good! The passenger side front fender was mangled,
the
front nose was wayyyyyyy beyond repair, and the rear passenger side
quarter
panel needs a fixin'! She will be back very soon though! If
any car
is
worth the time, money, and effort.......she is! Oh.....the stock
H.O. 305
hasn't
given up yet! My dad and I put it in his work van and it will
probably
see 200,000 miles, or maybe more!
I
quess I got one of the good(long lasting) SS Montes!
My
friend Mat bought his 1987 Monte SS 20 days after I bought my SS!
It
is silver with gray/blue interior and had the stock H.O. 305 and the 200
4R
tranny
had been rebuilt. It has factory tinted windows and Iroc wheels.
This
car
is so sleek, but I like mine better! We used to cruise side by side
on main
street
every Friday and Saturday night! It was a blast! The cops didn't
like us
much
though! :) They couldn't tell us apart! How often do you see
two silver
SS
Montes driving beside each other? I thought it was awesome!
It was
almost
like our cars were meant to be together! One night Mat decided
to
try and race my SS with my 350 in it! He tried a little too hard
and
threw
a piston through the block! The 350 was just too much for it! :)
He
was very devastated! Then after staying up all night drinking, a
friend
and I went for a drive in my car. She likes our Montes! We
drove
around for quite a while talking. Then I decided to show off a
little
and hit a guard rail. So both of our Montes were taken out on the
same
night. I thought we would both be back out tearin' up the streets
again
soon after....but my SS still needs more fixin'. Mat has put a mild
350
bored
.030 over in his and it is back better than ever! A year later....mine
still
waits! Considering both of our Montes went out on the same night,
I
thought they would probably come back at the same time too! But I
have
other
cars to keep up and things that go with life to take care of! Mat
beat
me
to it! Mat also has a 78 Monte that was his first! It has a
305(not a
High
Output). It is light brownish gold and is in pretty decent shape
and
has
great potential! A friend of Mat's wrecked his SS a bit for him,
so
now
he has to give her some more attention! In the meantime
he
drives an 80's Firebird! The car is just sweet! But its a 2.8
V-6!
Unfortunately,
I am financially unable to fix up my SS right now! I
would
love to be able to drive her down the street with pride again!
Hopefully
next summer! If anyone can donate a $dollar$
or two, or maybe
even
a few for the beast to live again, I would greatly appreciate it!
I would
post
your names and or web page links on my page! Please help if you can!
This
car is my life! Or if you can help Mat and donate a dollar or two
so he
can
upgrade his SS, that would be awesome too! I will post before and
after
pics of my SS as I fix her up! So keep checkin back!
