THE LONG 'TREK' BACK By DON KAPLAN THE next "Star Trek" series is already on the drawing board and could hit the air by 2002. Veteran "Star Trek" writer Brannon Braga and series executive producer Rick Berman are in the early stages of a new series, according to officials at Paramount - the studio that produces the TV show and films. Reports have been circulating in recent weeks that the new "Star Trek" focuses on up-and-coming space explorers and will be called "Flight Academy Star Trek." A Paramount spokeswoman confirmed a new series was in the works, but labeled reports of a young explorers "Star Trek" as "bogus." "[Brannon and Berman] are in the early, early stages of a new series concept," she said. "It's early on in the stages of discussion of what it is or isn't, but it's not [about Starfleet Academy]. That's never even been discussed." Paramount sources said a pilot could "see the light of day by 2002." For years, rumors have circulated about the possibility of a new "Top Gun"-like show called "Starfleet Academy" featuring a younger generation of "Star Trek" explorers. Recently, some insiders have even jokingly referred to the rumored project by several sarcastic names including "Star Trek 90210," "Buffy, the Starfleet Officer," "10 Things I Hate About Klingons," and "Dawson's Trek." |

According to Mr. Showbiz (http://mrshowbiz.go.com) and Ain't It Cool News (http://www.aint-it-cool-news.com), Star Trek: Flight Academy is being created at this very moment. This article was written June 29, 1999 so it might of been changed. From many people I have been hearing that they weren't going to make it, but I don't see no article saying that. Well, anyways, about the series. Well, first of all, they are making this series (which might also be made into a movie) because they want more money. They didn't make that much money from Insurrection and they think instead of using middle aged characters they should start out fresh by using young characters. This series will be featuring mostly all teenagers from what I have heard. They are trying to get the young viewers to watch Star Trek from this. So they have to go 90210 to get viewers? HECK NO! All they need to do is make a very good series. Many people have said they use to watch Star Trek, but not no more cause it's dumb! I do seem to find the Original Series episodes better than most of the Voyager episodes and some of the DS9 episodes. The Next Generation was a very good series also, but that's when people stopped watching Star Trek. People want to see a good episode every week, not 3 weeks of crappy episodes and then 1 good episode and then 6 bad episodes and 3 good episodes. THAT MAKES PEOPLE NOT WANT TO WATCH IT! In conclusion, you don't need to go 90210 with Star Trek to make more people watch it. IT WILL JUST HURT IT! All you need is good writers...
