Here at Kila school, we have asked our lunch server, Mrs. Waller, how she has made our school lunches better. She says to make them better she has put more variety and better quality in the meals. She doesn't know if the students will like the new meals until they have tried them. Mrs. Waller also said that the students have responded well towards the few they have tried so they will be used again.
Before they start a meal, they have to look through their recipes to find one they think will please the school. Also, they are only allowed three fat and two lean meals per week. We have asked her where she gets her recipes and she said they are adapted from the state, parents, teachers, and other schools. Some outside recipes have to be changed to fit our nutritional standards. Mrs. Waller puts a lot of time into serving our meals because she has to decide on what to serve, and if she can serve it to all the students.
The one thing we are all wondering is how she figures
out how much to charge for a lunch? She has to figure in the price
of labor, food, and how much the community and school board will
allow or sustain. All that added together totals $1.50 for adults
and $1.25 for students and children. We have also started our
school in the breakfast program this year. Mrs. Waller says it
is going real good and they are getting great comments on the
food that start the kids day.
