Kila’s History

By: Chevy Davis

About 48 miles southwest of Glacier National Park, is a small town by the name of Kila, MT. The town of Kila got its start in the 1890’s with the opening of the Enterprise Lumber Mill, that brought workers and their families.

In the late 1890’s Kila had a little business, but they were very limited in stock. There used to be a railroad running from Kila through the Enterprise Mill, and out to Marion, but it has since been removed.

Up until the 1970’s Kila School had only one building, with two rooms, and a basement. There was also a barn for the students to keep their horses in during school hours. The school was heated by wood stove and there was a pump in the middle of the school yard. Girls had to pump and haul water, while boys had to gather, split, and haul firewood.

Now the barn is gone, along with all of Kila’s stores, including the two hotels. There are four buildings at the school. Kila's population has also changed. It used to be over five hundred people and now it is slightly under four hundred.

The school has a basketball team, a baseball team, a volleyball team, a wrestling program, and an annual track meet.
