About us

" The Grand Coteau area has remained basically a farming community since its first known land grant 1776. Acadian, Anglo-American and Irish families were attracted to the community through the early -19th century. A small urban community developed in the mid-19th century, with an influx of French and German merchants to serve the surrounding area.

The diversity of backgrounds, over a century, led to a variety of architectural styles, Creole, French, Acadian, Anglo-American and Victorian building styles are reflected in the houses and store-fronts of Grand Coteau. The majority of existing structures date from 1840's through the 1860's. During this period of development, the area changed from a farming community to a town. Today, the town of Grand Coteau comprises one of the finest collections of mid-19thcentury cottages in the state.

One of the most interesting historical sites in Grand Coteau is the Academy of the Sacred Heart, which was founded in 1821 on 400 arpents of land donated by the widow of Charles Smith. The Academy is the second oldest institution of higher learning for women west of the Mississippi. Through the determined effort of the Sacred Heart nuns, the Academy has remained in continuos operation through fire, epidemic and war. The Academy is the site of the miracle of Grand Coteau, the only verified miracle on the North American continent. "
