Lakers using experience to work towards a strong season

By: ANNA SAVERUD

The red and white sports posters hanging around the school may seem out of place, considering they lack the traditional black and orange colors.

Though the colors on those Kalispell Lakers posters are different, they still express the same schoolspirit and intensity.

"Lakers baseball is just a lot of fun," said junior Matt Fregerio. "I’ve played for a really long time. It’s a challenge, and has always been a part of my summers."

Fregerio is not alone. For many of the Lakers, the love of the game and the fact that they have grown up with it, are the reason to play.

"It’s been so much fun, playing with these guys forever," said senior Jesse Hedeen. "They’re just a great group of guys to hang out with."

It’s a good thing, too, that the players remain such good friends, since their season can possibly span eight months. The Lakers began practicing in mid-January and began regular season games on April 25.

Baseball consumes most of the players’ summers, and depending on records can last into the later part of July and even early August.

The season, now in its second month of games, is going well for the Lakers. With a 7-5 record, the guys are pleased with the start.

"We work a lot," said Fregerio. "We pretty much practice every weekday, and if we don’t have a game on Saturday, we get together then, too."

That hard work that the Lakers have put in has paid off.

"I think we’re good everywhere on the field," said Fregerio. "No one position really sticks out, but we’re a solid team everywhere."

"We need to work on the number of errors," added Larcom. "Let’s call them contagious defensive errors. Once we do one, it’s hard to stop!"

Tactically and mentally, the Lakers are looking to improve for the rest of the season under head coach Randy Russell.

This weekend, May 12-14, the Lakers host the Canadian Days Tournament, and may be seen playing at their home field south of town.

"It will be a great weekend of games," said Larcom, "and a good time for people to come out and watch us play."
