Golfers swinging for state title By: SARAH BRASETH They dont run sprints, they dont do pushups, they dont do sit-ups, and when they drive to the hole or receive the long ball its at a leisure walk. But according to some golf team members, they arent just "putting" around. "A typical weekend for varsity golfers includes walking two 18-hole rounds that are five miles each while carrying a bag," said junior Lexie Bianchi. "People think golf is an easy sport, but it takes a lot out of you. " Every day golf team members strive to perfect their forms and their scores either on the greens or on the driving range. Every Tuesday the girls go out and shoot nine holes, and the boys shoot 18 holes. Out of about 35 golfers only a lucky 10 five girls and five boys will represent Flathead at the next varsity tournament, which involves a total of about 60 to 70 golfers from around the state. "Its fun to go out and play in tournaments to see what everybody else shoots," said junior Logan Lindholm. So far Flathead has been shooting up there with everybody else. "Our season is going pretty well this far," said Brieske. "The girls are shooting pretty well." "We have a really young team this year," said Lindholm. "There are a lot of younger guys getting experience. Its been interesting to see who has come out." As for the rest of the season, the golf team feels its scores will remain up to par. "The rest of the season should go well," said Brieske. "We can only get better, and we hope to place in the top five at state tournament." "Were hoping to place at state," said Lindholm. The state tournament for the golfers is in Great Falls on May 18 and 19. This weekend the golfers are in action in Kalispell for the Flatfish Invitational tournament. |
