Choir retreats to the halls
for a change of tempo By Kaitlyn Buffington Arrow Staff What is to be expected at a choir retreat? Well, lots and lots of singing, obviously. But junior, Betsy McGarvey says otherwise. We laughed, we cried, we had a good time. But we didn't sing, said McGarvey of the Concert Choir's September 24 retreat. The purpose of it was to get to know each other; we already know how to sing.
We had a transportation problem, said choir director, Catherine Robinson. But honestly, I liked it here better. It allowed more kids to participate. This time allowed the singers to introduce themselves and provided an opportunity to learn more about each other on a more personal level. It placed them in a comfortable setting where they could open up to one another. There's a deep trust in our class, said senior Bekah Smith. We can trust each other with our secrets, our hard times, and what we've been through in life. In the morning, the students ate breakfast and wrote encouraging notes for all 59 members. The notes were not just for new members, but for everyone, said junior Josh Berg. This was a time for new friends and old, to share their lives and come together for one common purpose. No, not to sing, but to form a harmonious friendship. Choir retreat was fulfilling to the soul, says Smith and comforting to the heart.
