Braves football going strong into second half of season By Andy Frey Arrow Staff Call it rebuilding without the re. With 11 returners who last year either started or saw a lot of action, the Flathead Braves varsity gridders are building on their team morale, and focusing on their main goal of winning state. This year we are the same talent-wise as we were last year, said Coach Bob Applegate. With those 11 returners, that is a good carryover. Last year the Braves made the playoffs, but lost their first game. Last year we had a lot of seniors leave, and we were more defensive minded and our offense wasn't that strong, said halfback Alex Athy. This year we are more complete on both sides of the ball. This year the Braves are focusing more on working together. If we are going to get it done, we are going to get it done together, said Applegate. Our philosophy is that we have no superstars, we need everybody to play. We can't just depend on our offense to score or our defense to shut people down, it needs to be a team effort. Quarterback Pete Shull added, This year we have more of a team unity. We want to beat Helena Capital and have two playoff games at home. On Oct. 29 the Braves play Capital, the number-one ranked team in the state. Capital has been hard to beat so far. They are blowing out teams their offense is sparking and their defense is shutting people down, said Athy. We need to have a complete game to win. We want to get better every day, and improve every week, said Applegate, and our main goal is of course to win state.
