Speech team victorious despite lack of experience

josh_speech (10495 bytes)Who in their right mind would show up on a Saturday at school at 7:30 AM? Flathead speech and debate would. With an undefeated season and two consecutive state titles under their belt, the speech and debate team faces a new season and a new challenge. With hordes of new members and a lack of seasoned veterans, the question stands: can they keep their edge?

(The large number of new people)"puts a lot of stress on the shoulders of the varsity people and the teachers," said junior Jim Layton. "There are so many new people and they all need to be trained."

It is no surprise that there are so many new faces this year, at the introductory speech meeting at the beginning of the year, over 200 people showed up. And with less than half of last year's undefeated team left new team members are a necessity.

Going into the Kalispell Kickoff, the first meet of the year, Flathead had more than 100 people competing for the top spot in 11 different events.

At the Kalispell Kickoff on October 16, there were at least two Flathead team members in finals for every event.

Veterans and rookies alike came together at the end of the meet for the award ceremonies, to celebrate the win of the first tournament of the season, with a total of 265 points, in second was the Flathead JV team with 79 points. The ABC school champion, Columbia Falls, scored a total of 49. Despite the crushing win, Flathead still has a lot of ground to cover, to prepare for the next meets.

"The new people better get crackin" , 265 points is simply unacceptable," said senior Michael Greig. "We must work harder."

There was also, however, a feeling of overall happiness due to the enormous win.

"It was good to see what kind of competition that is coming up this season," said junior Josh Berg. "Also, winning the first tournament gives us a little boost."
