Nine touchdowns, nine extra points — final score 63-0. On Oct. 8, the Braves football team cruised to an easy homecoming victory over the Missoula Big Sky Eagles.

football (15665 bytes)“Our kids are more comfortable now and they are playing together better,” said Coach Bob Applegate, “We finally had four quarters of strong offense and defense.”

After a 17-0 win over Butte on Oct. 15 and a 45-42 victory over Helena High last Saturday, the Braves (8-0) are working towards an undefeated season, and a win over number-one ranked, Helena Capital.

“The idea of going undefeated feels really good,” said senior fullback Sam Woodson. “We are on a roll, and we are in the driver's seat.”

Woodson is a transfer from Missoula Sentinel High School.

“It felt good to beat Big Sky,” said Woodson, “It really boosted the team's ego.”

When talking about the chances of an undefeated season, Applegate said, “We just have to take one game at a time, because we may have the toughest schedule remaining of any AA school. We also need to keep improving.”

The Braves are one of three undefeated teams left, along with Capital and Billings West, and the win over Helena gave them of a spot in the playoffs.

The Braves have two games remaining, at home against Capital Oct. 29, and a finale in Missoula against Hellgate on Nov. 4. The game against Hellgate will be televised.

Helena Capital, is a strong team with a lot of returners on both sides of the ball. Capital had their first close game on Oct. 9 against Helena High, winning 7 to 6.

“They (Capital) have a good senior class with three or four kids being heavily recruited by major colleges,” said Applegate. “They are very athletic and have a good defense.”

Woodson added, “We need to keep everyone healthy, and stay humble to win.”

If the Braves can stay undefeated, it would give them two playoff games at home.

Junior linebacker Zach Lindsay said that the Braves have improved a lot since their first game. “Everyone is connected and working together more, and everyone knows their positions,” he said.

Woodson added: “We've gotten closer as a team.”
