Boys, Vidal take
state, girls finish third By: Anna Saverud ARROW STAFF Led by the first place finish of junior David Vidal, the Flathead Braves cross country team captured five of the top eight spots at the state cross country meet last Saturday, to win their third straight state cross country title. It would be cool to get a score of 15, said junior David Vidal last week, before he headed off to state. fifteen is the lowest score a team can possibly get. In order to achieve this, Flathead runners needed to place 1st through 5th. Last year the boys had a score of 23, which was an AA State record. The Braves didn't quite get the perfect score, but their combined score of 21 was good enough to obtain a gold trophy and break their previous record. Vidal became the state champion with a time of 14:42, which was one second off of the state record. Senior Kevin Clary passed a speedy CMR runner and finished with a time of 14:59 to take second place. Junior Seth Watkins was next for the Braves in fourth (15:03), followed in sixth place by senior Patrick Murphy (15:17), and sophomore Kurt Michels finished in eighth place (15:23). When asked about the 1999 Bravette cross country squad a few weeks prior to state, Coach Paul Jorgensen said, They are looking better. We are going to have a better team than I thought. The Bravettes, who came home with a second place finish last year, put up a good fight at this year's state tournament to bring home a third place bronze trophy. The Bravettes have been high in the Montana rankings and have brought hardware back to Flathead High for the last 14 years. The Bravettes top five scoring runners include Amber Arvidson (2nd, 17:56), Lindsay Judge (20th, 19:40), Julia McKinnon (23rd, 19:49), Andrea Foot (25th, 19:55), and Holly White (33rd, 20:10). Third place is a job well done for the Bravettes who were plagued with injuries for the majority of their season.
The Bravettes did just that in their match-up against Hellgate. Everyone contributed, and it was a good team effort, however this is just the beginning of our conference wins, said senior Mariah Tillo. The whole team feels they are improving, and they hope to make a strong showing at state. Our goal is to host a play-off game, and to do that you have to finish in the top four in the conference, said Latimer. |
