Appinokwis moves to raise standards

When you're walking into the mall this Christmas season to finish up your shopping, there's no doubt you'll hear the familiar ringing of a Salvation Army bell. But instead of the usual Santa Claus costume, you may see some students ringing the bell.

“Mrs. Barragan and Miss Arthur are really working hard this year to give a better name to the National Honor Society,” says junior David Vidal, “and (to encourage its members to) become more involved in the community.”

Since teachers Jean Barragan and Susan Arthur have taken over the National Honor Society at FHS, things are happening.

“We're going a long way to beef it up,” said Barragan at a meeting during lunch on Oct. 11.

So far everything is still in planning, but Barragan and Arthur want to raise the standards for students to get into the society.

“It's been at 3.0, we want it to be 3.4,” says Arthur. “Previous members ushered in at 3.0 will be grandfathered in to the new standard if it passes.”

NHS is meant to be a community service organization, and that is — the hope and goal of Barragan and Arthur.

“The National Honor Society is here for helping people. Making someone's day better at the soup kitchen or guiding parents around halls on parents night,” says junior Mark Ruby

The changes don't stop there either. Along with the new constitution, Appinokwis hopes to set up an international trip. They hope to plan a trip to England and Scotland during spring break this year and possibly to Australia next year.

“I think it's good that we're taking a new direction and making improvements,” says junior Katie Hammer. “By going to England, it's likely that more members will get involved.”

There is new optimism for NHS at Flathead.

“We will be doing more things for the community,” says Hammer, “and living up to the title of National Honor Society.”
