Stress is caused by: Serenity Atkinson ARROW STAFF If there is one thing that almost every high school teen is an expert on, it would have to be by a multitude of things including jobs, term papers, and government class. Dealing with and reducing this overwhelming stress is where most teens have trouble. Mind Tools Ltd., a psychological organization that specializes in helping people improve their lives through positive thinking, suggests the following, to help in stress reduction. The techniques that you select to reduce your stress should depend on the cause of the stress and the situation in which the stress occurs. In choosing methods to combat stress, it is worth asking yourself where the stress comes from. If outside factors such as important events or relationship difficulties are causing stress, then a positive thinking or imagery based technique may be effective. Where stress and fatigue are long term, lifestyle and organizational changes may be appropriate. If the feeling of stress come from adrenaline in your body, then it may be effective to relax the body and slow the flow of adrenaline, or exercise to "use up" some of that adrenaline. One of the most common forms of stress in teenagers comes from events or anxiety. This includes stress and anxiety before a speech, exam, presentation or performance, and stress that comes from unpleasant or irritating events. By anticipating stress you can prepare for it and work out how to control it when it happens. This can be carried out in a number of ways: Rehearsal: By running through a stressful event such as an interview or a speech several times in advance, you can polish your performance and build confidence. Planning: By analyzing the likely causes of stress, you will be able to plan your responses to likely forms of stress. These might be actions to alleviate the situation or may be stress management techniques that you will use. It is important that you formally plan for this. It is little use just worrying in an undisciplined way; this will be counter-productive. Avoidance: Where a situation is likely to be unpleasant, and will not yield any benefit to you, it may be one you can just avoid. You should be certain in your own mind, however, that this is the case. Another great way of dealing with stress is by exercising. According to Sports and Fitness magazine, stress primes your body for exercise by causing your muscles to swell with blood and oxygen. By exercising a moderate amount, 30 minutes a day, stress levels will drop. Dealing with stress is a very personal thing. How you deal with stress should be up to you. Whether you go exercising, relax, read a good book, or throw pots and pans at your neighbors cat, if it helps you feel better and doesnt harm anyone else, go for it! |
