Rappin’ the day away

Although most assembly speakers use formal speech to communicate their ideas, at the last FHS student assembly, juniors Josh Erickson (Lil’ Wax) and Matt Alexander (Nat Skills) decided to face the student body and present their thoughts in a more creative form:

Rap.

"We decided to do it the day before the assembly," says Erickson, "then we had to write it out and memorize it.

"It was all just out of my head, and Matt had a little part that he came up with by himself."

"It was hard because we only had one microphone," says Erickson. "It didn’t sound as well as it should have."

Despite the difficulties, the rappers received a standing ovation after their performance, the loudest applause of the assembly.

Erickson is obviously no beginner when it comes to rapping.

"I’ve been doing it with my friends every day since the fifth grade," says Erickson. "Just freestylin’ it."

Erickson first picked up his rap skills when he lived in Portland, Ore, where he also adopted the ‘thug’ image. He quickly realized he had a knack for the singing style, and also possessed the talent of being able to come up with lyrics as he went along.

"I learned a lot from other people, but I come up with most of my stuff on my own," says Erickson. "I never poodiddy (remix) it."

Erickson looks to the future with his talent, hoping to make a career as a rap musician. He already has several songs written that he believes are publishable.

"This summer I more than likely will be coming out with a CD," says Erickson. "I still need to get an agent and all that."

In the meantime he will continue to practice and perfect his style both in private and in public.

"Hopefully," says Erickson, "there will be more assemblies."
