Capitol ends Braves
run to state tourney By: Sarah Braseth ARROW STAFF It was high school basketball's make-or-break week, and the Braves had one down and one to go in their journey to the state tournament. With a record of 5-14 going into playoff week the Braves were looking to prove that the postseason can mean a brand new start. "We've improved a lot," said junior Mike Herzog. "We've learned we have to play hard every game to win." In their first two meetings, Missoula Big Sky upset the Braves, but in their first playoff game against Big Sky the Braves showed that they had what it took to win. With 23 seconds remaining Herzog hit the winning freethrow and clinched a second playoff game against Helena Capitol for the right to go to state. "It was cool that we beat Big Sky," said Herzog. "They had beaten us twice before but we knew that we could beat them." With increased confidence the Braves headed to Helena, where just last year, under the same conditions, they pulled off a win. The Braves couldnt repeat history, however, and Capitol ended the Braves season early, but not because of a lack of effort, hard work, or commitment. According to some teammates the season meant a lot to them, and they learned a lot about themselves, the game and how hard they can work. "I learned more lessons about basketball than I have about anything it takes a lot more than people think it does," said junior Steve Symington. "A 6-16 record wasnt what we wanted but thats okay, we can work hard in the off season, and have an awesome season next year." |
