Appinokwis seeks culture in Europe

While the goal for most students this Spring Break is to work on their tans, junior Mark Ruby dreams of knighthood.

"I’m going to perform some incredible feat of diplomacy and they’ll have no choice but to knight me," says Ruby.

From witnessing the changing of the guard in London to attempting to punt down the River Cams, the kids in the National Honor Societywill be having the time of their lives this Spring Break.

"I can’t wait to visit the home land of Sean Connery," says junior Roger Rowe. "And purchasing my own kilt."

This trip to Europe was the ingenious idea of National Honor Society supervisors Jean Barragan and Susan Arthur. Both new to their duty this year, the teachers have made it their goal to give the Honors Society a new name.

"The change in National Honor Society has been a significant one," says senior Cassie DeZort. "Ms. Arthur and Mrs. Barragan have just got it going, it’s been a complete 180 (degree) turn."

The pair have opened the door for these students, not just in traveling to Europe, but also in getting them active in the community.

"Last year you were a member, whereas this year, membership in National Honors Society means you’re involved," says DeZort.

Taking the trip to England and Scotland, is just another example of the changes to the Appinokwis routine. Giving students an opportunity to experience something that had never been offered to them before and learn from a culture most have never seen, is what the teachers are seeking.

"We both believe in the global classroom," says Arthur. "And we wanted to give these students an experience, an experience of international travel."

Their trip entails visiting universities in Cambridge, going to the National Gallery of Art in London, possibly attending a play at the Globe Theater and staying two nights with British host families. The 23 students will also be taking an excursion to Edinburgh, Scotland, for a day and a half, sightseeing at museums and old palaces.

"I’ve always wanted to see England," says Ruby. "And when I return you can all call me ‘Sir Ruby.’"
