Speech defeats rival for
three-peat By: Jim
Bennett ARROW STAFF Energized by the Speech and Debate team's first win this season in Billings, and hoping for a `three-peat' state champion, a feat never before accomplished in Flathead Speech history. And with a two-point victory over their nemesis Bozeman, all their dreams seem to have come true. I told myself I would work the hardest to win, and I would come back a state champion, said senior Sarah Berg. But after the last round, I was sure I had lost. Yet, it was up to Berg and her partner Cassie Dezort in the final round of Policy Debate. The team was down by two points with one last chance to win, a win would push them over Bozeman, but a loss would drop them down four points. When they announced that our team debaters had won, it was an amazing experience, said junior Andrew Bissell. It was like something out of a movie. Another uplifting story, dealing with a talented Parliamentary Debate speaker's crossover into Humorous Interpretation, senior Dustin de Yong went through the entire season with a first place finish at every tournament, including the State Championship. Winning, for me was like a bite out of a live cow, said senior Dustin de Yong. And when the team won, it was like riding that cow all the way home. Seniors Alissa Militello and B.G. Istre both finished first in their events, bringing an eventful close to the second win for the team this year. Both Militello and Istre have not only been named state champs, but also have traveled to nationals in their past. |
