New career counselor eager
to help out By: Frank
Janes ARROW STAFF After working the last few years out of town, Ashley Mason has come to FHS as the new counselor in the career center. I had an hour commute to work every day, says Mason, I enjoyed the job but I wanted to work in my own community. Mason worked for almost six years with Bigfork and Whitefish students in Upward Bound, a preparatory program to help kids who could fall through the cracks for college. With that amount of experience, Mason is not new to the demands of the job. But she believes that at Flathead she will be able to function more efficiently. This is the same job I've been doing, says Mason, but it's a much better setup. In the last five years they've really upgraded the technology. Everything from the computers to the career and college software avail able is relatively new says Mason. The school is also hoping to get new presentation software and hardware in the near future. All these things allow her to help students much more quickly and effectively. Although she's only been here since last Wednesday, Mason feels fairly comfortable in her new surroundings. I wasn't nervous at all, says Mason, until I saw the pile of scholarships on my desk. Aside from mountains of paperwork, Mason loves the job and the interaction with students. I've worked with all age groups, but high school kids are my favorite, says Mason. It's a good age, many of these kids still have a lot of interest in the world and their place in it. At this time of year, with seniors suddenly being confronted with college applications and the concept of life outside of high school, Mason serves an important purpose. |
