Writers talent taken
regional By: Kory Sutherland ARROW STAFF Where can you let your emotions flow freely, your ideas run rampant and your mind expand? Well, paper and pencil isn't too bad a place start. In fact, as 10 FHS students discovered, not only is writing a good way to express yourself, it also can potentially be profitable. When I have a lot on my mind, it's a way to express things, said senior Bekah Smith, who was selected as one of the top poets in the Celebration of Young Poets x contest. With no designated topic, the competition was open to all who had the drive to write. I wrote about a best friend, said sophomore Rachael Araiz. It was just a good poem I felt like having published. Numerous students entered the contest, but it was not until late last month that students received notice of their honorable mentions. Entering out of interest, for fun, or the drive for extra college funds, the nominations caught many completely by surprise. I just like to write poetry and I thought it was a really good poem, said Melissa Palicz. I forgot I even entered it! The 10 winners were seniors Melanee Francis, Bekah Smith, Erin Rieger, Melissa Palicz, Julia Keenan, Sarajean Jimenez, juniors Sara Sheldon, Sarah Strandburg, Nikki Keith and sophomore Racheal Araiz. All will be entered into a finalist competition where their compositions will be judged against students' from schools in five other states. The winners then will have their works published in a book sponsored by Creative Communication, and more than $1,500 in prizes will be divided among them. The final winners will be announced in May. |
