Youth Alive hosts annual abstinence rally

There’s no doubt that love was in the air at Flathead High School last week. The smell of flowers filled the air and candy consumption was at an all time high as students celebrated Valentine’s Day.

But a number of students took part not only in the annual commercialization of love, but along with it made a promise to themselves — a promise of abstinence. Flathead’s Youth Alive held their annual "True Love Waits" rally on Feb. 9 in the FHS auditorium.

"It was really wonderful to see so much support," said senior BG Istre. "We were hoping for a couple of hundred people to show up, but we ended up having almost 600 in attendance."

To promote the rally, club members made posters for the halls, announcements over the intercom and invitations to community churchs. The rally — which was open to the enitre community — consisted of speakers, song and students testifying about their choice to abstain from premarital sex. Many also signed posters and cards announcing their decision. The posters are being displayed in the different schools around the Flathead Valley to encourage others to make the same decision.

"It was great to see so many kids there, and adults there for support," said senior Megan Buffington. "It was inspiring to know so many had chosen to not have premarital sex."

Youth Alive meets every Friday morning at 7:00 a.m. in the auditorium. A group of students open each morning with worship and their band plays. Along with that each week, the club asks different speakers from around the valley to come in and speak. The morning ends with a closing worship and another round of singing.

"I think it’s important to have a club like Youth Alive here at FHS so that students have the chance to express their feelings and opinions in regards to religion," said Istre. "It’s a really fun and supportive group of people."

Junior Serena Randall agreed with the importance of this kind of club in a school.

"I think we need more in life than just things," said Randall. "It’s important to have a well-rounded life spiritually, mentally, and physically. Youth Alive is a great way to strengthen all three of these aspects."
