Save the world, make it a better place. That’s the simple aim of the FHS Environmental Club. You’ve seen their signs pleading with you to get involved and help out. They are in charge of setting up the asphalt hikes for our school’s portion of the highway and strategically placing the recycling boxes around the school. Now club members breaking in some new activities, trying to tempt students to join in and discover that saving the world can actually be fun.

"We’re just trying to make students at Flathead High School more conscious of the environment around them," says junior KC McBroom.

Currently, the club is taking on the project of making use of all that used Christmas wrapping paper that gets ripped and torn and then usually thrown away. They came up with the idea of making use of the excess wrappings. They are recycling the paper to create cards and small journals, which they will attempt sell on the upcoming Earth Day. They have decided to donate whatever profit they generate to an environmental organization.

Earth Day, April 22, is an important event for the club and holds more in store for them than simply selling their cards. They hope to organize a parade this year that will be done by the students alone. They wish to hold the parade on Earth Day, and include whoever is interested. The club is considering getting some bands to come and hopefully play in Depot Park.

"We’re having the parade to get peopled involved," says junior Sky Boggs. "Anyone who wants to be in it can be."

And when they can find time to pry themselves away from their work, the students like to take a chance to enjoy the great outdoors. In late January the students took a trip up to Glacier National Park’s Apgar center and went snow-shoeing around Lake MacDonald.

"It was a lot of fun," says McBroom. "It was nice to go to the park and be outside."

The future for the club is full of opportunities and new ideas. Members hope to add plastic and glass recycling containers to the school and ship them to Missoula — the nearest center for the recycling of glass.

"We have the can recycling in the foyer," said McBroom. "We hope to start glass and plastic bottle recycling also."

These kids are trying to make the student body more aware of the needs of their environment, whether it be by a parade or an asphalt hike.

"I think the purpose of Environmental Club is to have some organization where kids interested in the environment can get together with other people who share the same interest," said Boggs. "It’s more fun doing things together and more things get accomplished that way."
