Braves wrestle strong at
state By: Anna Saverud ARROW STAFF The cartwheels, flips, rolls, and dives are over for the year the wrestlers are done. The Flathead Braves wrestling team traveled to Billings for the State tournament on Feb. 9. Twenty-one wrestlers and their coaches piled into two vans and prepared for the long trip, and the best part was, they didnt come back empty handed. Junior Eric Richeson claimed the state title for the 112 pound weight division. "It was overwhelming," said Richeson. "I didnt believe it at first. I got really teary eyed and ran to hug Coach Anderson. He was teary too!" Five different Braves were involved in medal matches. Senior Frank Janes fought a hard battle, coming away with a second place finish at 105 lbs. Also senior Sam Woodson, 152 lbs., added some points to the teams score as he placed fourth in his weight class. Sophomore Gerard Robinson claimed third place for 98 lbs, while his classmate Tanner Marvin captured sixth place at 119 lbs. "As a team I think we didnt do too badly, but we didnt do that great either," said junior Bret Saubert, who competed in at 135. "We took three more guys than last year, but we placed the same." Despite the fact that they will lose some seniors, Flathead will still be strong next year. "I think were going to have a lot of good kids," said Robinson. This years freshmen were a lot better than last years." Along with the 16 state competitors who arent seniors, Richeson will be back to improve his 30-2 record. "Im looking to have an undefeated season next year," said Richeson. "At state? Well, I have a title to defend." |
