Time to give the band the recognition they deserve

ARROW STAFF

What would Homecoming be without the marching band? What would basketball games be without the pep band? What would The Arrow be without recognizing them? The way it is now.

We feel that the music department, and more specifically the band, is not getting enough recognition. We work hard to boost school spirit and give you performances to enjoy.

In the fall all three bands go out to Rawson Field every day. We sand in the cold and run through songs and formations over and over so that we can perform for you at homecoming. On the day of homecoming we are working from the moment school gets out until late at night. Yet when The Arrow came out, where were we? In a tiny article on the back page's lower corner that didn't even talk about our performance or how hard we had worked.

Where are you an hour before each basketball game? Pep band is in the band hall practicing our music. We come out and play before the game, at half time, and during time outs to help support the team and get the crowd involved.

Yet when are we mentioned? Never.

The Arrow is not the only one who forgets the band, but they are something that can change this. All we ask for is the same recognition the teams get for less work. Our `season' is all year long and our work load is at least as heavy. We would like to see anyone who disagrees to pick up an instrument and play the school song from memory, or march in perfect formation while trying to stop shaking from the cold. Then they can see what a band student goes through.
