Fourteen of Flathead's finest, wearing white T-shirts and blue jeans, can be seen on posters all throughout the school, indicating to all that the 1999-2000 wrestling season is underway. wrestling.jpg (9938 bytes)

“I think we're ready,” said varsity head coach Jeff Anderson. “We've had two and a half weeks of good hard practice.”

The 14 guys in white T-shirts and their teammates have been working hard in the off-season in order to be ready to reach the goals they have set for themselves. These goals include what they would like to do here at the home duels, and what the goal is for the state tournament.

“We have a lot of returnees and lettermen back with us this year,” said Anderson. “All of them will help us reach our goals.”

The Braves are aiming for an undefeated record at home, and to lead in all categories versus their opponents. At the end of the season the Braves would like to see themselves among the top three at state. Last season the Braves had a hard time at state, losing two of their top wrestlers right before the tournament and finishing seventh.

“It would be really nice to sweep the Missoula schools too,” said junior Tyler Harrington, who wrestles at 125 pounds, when asked about the Braves' goals.

“It's going to be tough to get all that we want done, but we're working hard, and are very disciplined at practice,” said Harrington. “We all run before and after practice.”

Junior Charlie Martin, who wrestles at 135 pounds, has a personal goal of placing at state this year. “I'm just really excited to get this season started. I love the road trips,” said Martin.

This season will bring some new faces to the Braves team. Transfer seniors Sam Woodson from Missoula Sentinel, and Colin Wallack from Columbia Falls come to the Braves as finishers at last year's state tournament.

“It's a great group (the Braves) and they are all willing to work hard and all of them give it their best effort,” said Woodson who wrestles at 152, of his new teammates. “I like Anderson's coaching style better, and Flathead has an all around better program then Sentinel did. I'm happy to be here.”

The Braves opened their season out in Ronan last Friday, where they handed the Braves a 44-31 loss.

The next day the Braves competed in the Polson Invitational, where they ended up in third place with 133 points, behind Columbia Falls and Corvallis.

Monday the Braves travelled to Libby where they lost a close match, 35-36.

Their first home duel is Dec. 14 against Whitefish at 7:30 p.m.
