FHS clubs ring in the holidays

Despite the new snow on Big Mountain and the hours of Christmas shopping left to do before Dec. 25, FHS students are volunteering their time to bring a little holiday cheer to those in need. ringing.jpg (14069 bytes)

Last Saturday, several members of the Appinokwis could be found ringing the traditional bell and collecting money for Salvation Army. Working in shifts of roughly one hour each, they put in a total of more than 10 hours of work.

“I volunteer to do this every Christmas,” said senior Guthrie Quist. “I love it when people smile while giving me money.”

But those giving money are not the only ones smiling. This money will go toward providing gifts, clothing and even food for those who cannot afford it.

“It cost time,” said senior Aaron Bouschor. “But it more than paid it back in the way I felt afterwards.”

The Appinokwis were not the only ones busy this weekend, though. The Family, Career and Community Leaders of America — formerly Future Homemakers of America — were also busy with projects of their own.

For several years the FCCLA has sponsored a needy family through the Nurturing Center; a year long project in which they provide meals during the holidays and more recently, gifts for special occasions.

FCCLA teams up with classes at FHS as well to assist these families. Child development, Prep for life, and the house building class all donate supplies and ideas on how best to use the little time they are given to sponsor each family.

Thus far this year FCCLA has provided Thanksgiving dinner, and thrown a baking party in preparation for one of the childrens' birthday.

Other organizations are planning projects as the holiday season progresses and many invite students outside the club to join them.

“I like to get involved with as many things like this as I can,” said senior Aaron Denny. “Sometimes I don't even know the names of the people I am working with, but I always enjoy it, and I always feel fulfilled because of it.”
