Braves and Bravettes looking to swim their way to
state title By: Andy Frey ARROW STAFF Sexy bathing suits and speedos, freshly shaved arms and legs, and the smooth feel of
cool, blue water all at 5:30 in the morning make the sport of swimming what
it is. Early morning practices and many other reasons are what have the Flathead Braves
and Bravettes swim teams ready for the 1999-2000 season. We are looking really good, said senior Jenny Nerison, who last year won state in two events. I think we have a good chance at taking state, or at least being in the top three. On the boys' side, sophomore David Edwards said, We are looking pretty strong this year; we had a pretty good turnout. We have five or six new guys that are pretty good, and we have the same crew from last year, added junior Matt Hartmann. We only lost two or three guys. Both the Braves and Bravettes started their season off right, when they both grabbed first place victories at the Kalispell Invitational last weekend. The Bravettes scored an impressive 332 points, and the Braves came in at 273. The girls won all three relay races and had three girls, Nerison, senior Jessie Ford and freshman Amber Wlater, capture first-place finishes. The guys claimed two second place finishes in the relay races, and had one individual first place finish, Hartmann. With strong returners and some strong freshman, the swim team has strong hopes for the season. I think we are going to be really good, said Ford. We have a lot of promising young swimmers, including Betsy McGarvey, Sierra Parker, and Neil Glutting. They are all showing a lot of potential and are very excited about the sport. Ford spent last year as an exchange student in Norway, and now she is back and ready to swim. I love the competition and working hard in the pool, said Ford. This year I want to qualify for junior nationals, and just improve my swimming. Ford and her teammates seem to share the same attitude about going out to be competitive and win, but most importantly to go out have fun. I'd like to take state again in the 100 breaststroke and the 200 individual medley, said Nerison. But I also want to have fun, I enjoy swimming everyday because I like the feeling of moving through the water. Added Hartmann: I just want to have fun, that is all. I like swimming so much because I like to be around Dan (Distefano). However, the swimming season isn't all fun and games. With six meets still to come in the season, the team must keep swimming well and working hard. The next meet for the team is Dec. 11 in Havre for the Havre Invitational. We need to come together and support each other, said Ford. We need to swim the best that we can. |
