Combining classical vocal training and a keen pop sensibility, The Trenchcoats, a group of four extraordinary a cappella singers, have serenaded audiences for more than 10 years.
On Monday, The Trenchcoats came to Flathead High School and treated the school to a special morning performance. While in the Flathead Valley they visited schools to promote their concert at Whitefish High School on Tuesday night.
Their teaser performance here at Flathead was, in one word, spectacular. Performing songs ranging from “Evenflow” by Pearl Jam to a very special version of “In the Still of the Night” with audience participation, The Trenchcoats blew the roof off of Flathead High School.
“It was amazing,” said senior Gina Johnson. “I skipped my Italian class to go see their concert.”
Excitement over their appearance was evident well before the group arrived. Catherine Robinson, Flathead High School’s new choir director, was especially excited to see the group in the Flathead, mostly because of her exposure to the group in the past.
“I first saw them about 10 years ago when I was in Seattle,” said Robinson. “I was at a music festival with my junior high choir. The group came out on stage in these trenchcoats and the kids just loved it. ”
Robinson, however, wasn’t the only one excited to see the group perform.
“Any male a cappella group is pretty cool,” said senior Cody Berg. “It shows a lot of guys that being a serious singer isn’t just for women.”
Much of the popularity The Trenchcoats enjoy among choirs and singing groups is due to their vocal talents and showmanship. The students at FHS were not disappointed.
“It’s nice to see a male group with such a great vocal range,” said Berg. “It was very exciting to see them.”
After their performance, Trenchcoats members stayed to talk to choir classes. Students asked a range of questions, relating to the group’s history, to each members marital status.
“We tour anywhere from 170 to 200 days a year, so we’re all married to each other, in a way,” the said one Trenchcoats group member. When asked what each of their wives felt about their constant touring, each member said that their wives’ dedication to the group is what allows them to keep doing what they love.
In the end, The Trenchcoats did what they came here to do. They created considerable excitement over their performance for the audiences they performed for.
“They were awesome,” said senior Emily Johnson. “That’s all I can say.” |
