Someone rummaging through garbage may seem odd, but many students have become accustomed to seeing senior Luke Van Helden search garbage bins for aluminum cans, or haul cardboard out to his car.
“At first I thought it was weird,” said FHS graduate Montage Hix about Van Helden picking through the garbage. “But after we talked I understood why he did it.”
Van Helden said he tries to live by the motto “reduce, reuse, recycle.” He often travels to the recycling center with cans, plastic bottles, and cardboard that was thrown in the school trash.
“I appreciated his taking the time to make things better,” said DeKort. “We need more people like Luke on the planet.”
Teachers and students at FHS are enthusiastic about Van Helden’s recycling project.
“He is always willing and ready to help,” said senior April Walker. “He gets things done instead of just talking about doing them.” “There’s interest out there about recycling,” said Van Helden. “The club would bring them together and get them organized.”
Van Helden believes the more people that get involved in recycling, the more efficient the process will be. With this in mind, he has thought about organizing a recycling club.
The main objectives of the club would be educating children about the importance of recycling, helping the environment as much as possible and motivating the community to recycle.
“I’m a ripple in the pond,” said Van Helden. “I’d like to leave the school knowing I got something started.” |
