During Homecoming weekend the boys and girls cross country team went to Yakima, Wash. to race against 2,000 other runners — and they even had a little fun, too.

With Flathead’s wins, the boys put themselves up a notch from eighth to seventh place in the national rankings. They beat the fifth-ranked team in the nation and their most intense competition, University High.

“Yakima was really exciting; it came down to the last race,” said junior David Vidal. “There were 100 yards left and then two of our people passed the opposing team.”

Flathead started out a no-name team from Montana, but soon earned itself a reputation. The meet had a format with seven races altogether, and each featured a sprint to the finish. The boys prevailed in the end however, and took first place out of the biggest schools. The top finishers for the boys were Kevin Clary, Robbie Lamb, Patrick Murphy, David Vidal, Seth Watkins and Brett Winegar.

“I think we did really well as a team,”  said junior Lindsey Judge, “We were really pumped because of everyone cheering and to see each of our teammates run.”

Not only did FHS runners race well, but the cross country team had great school spirit.

“There was a lot of school pride and it was really neat to see everyone go out there and support the team,” said  senior Jeremy Pris. “Everywhere you went you could see the orange jackets flying around.”

The Flathead girls team captured victory too, taking third place overall out of the top schools.  The girls who placed well at the race were Amber Arvidson, Jane Berry, Hillary Buettner, Hanni Buettner, Julie Cummings, Lindsey Judge and Julia McKinnon.
Even though the cross country team wasn’t able to go to Homecoming, they dressed up and had a night on the town in Spokane.  They made it to “martini night” at Mr. C’s, a restaurant and bar where they danced the night away — without the martinis, of course.

“It was fun dressing up and going to the restaurant,” said junior Sean Kelly. “We had a good time dancing.”
