Senior Aaron Arnoux and junior Levi Kays work on their defensive moves following the victory over CMR.

As the final seconds rolled off the clock, the Flathead Braves realized that they had accomplished an unthinkable feat:  after 27 years, they had beaten CMR at the Rustlers’ home field.

“Unbelievable,” said senior Joel Robinson of the 21-7 victory on Saturday, Sept. 25. “Everyone was yelling and I was excited.”

“I was really psyched,” said junior Jon Sears. “Everyone was yelling and jumping up and down. I didn’t even know it was happening.”

Head Coach Bob Applegate described the victory as a “great feeling” because he knew the team could win. It was gratifying for the team because they did win.

“It was a good feeling for my kids and my program,” said Applegate, “Wow, bygosh, we finally got it done.”
Last year the Braves were defeated by CMR 33-13 at Rawson during Homecoming, adding more fuel to the rivalry fire. The Braves came into Memorial Stadium on CMR’s homecoming ready for revenge.

The victory was “payback from last year,” said senior Jason Robinson about the defeat of CMR on their homecoming.

“It felt great to come back and return the favor,” said senior Matt Regier.

The key factor for winning the game was the hard work and success of the defense.

“The team who plays the best defense is going to win the ball game,” said Applegate, “We played a more aggressive defense.”

The Braves defense, under the leadership of Joel Robinson,  showed aggression through three fumble recoveries and one interception.

“The defense was jacked,” said Joel, “I was yelling and smacking heads.”

Many of the Braves feel that the victory over CMR will set the tempo for the rest of the season.  Applegate said that this year’s Braves are a very close team.  This friendship and camaraderie will help the Braves achieve their goals and give them a good shot at the playoffs.

“We set our team’s goals at the beginning of the year,” said Regier. “Our first and most important goal was getting to the state game.”

“Second was beating CMR,” interjected Jason, “because it was a revenge factor.  We wanted to put their hopes down the drain.”

The Braves’ season is off to an impressive start. The team hopes to continue the success they’ve had. Their game schedule should keep the team on their toes in an effort to make the playoffs.

“The kids know it was a big win in Great Falls, but harder games are coming,” said Applegate, “We have to focus on one game at a time.”

By beating CMR, the Braves proved they are a force to be reckoned with in the race for the state title.

“We proved that we can beat CMR and we have earned more respect,” said junior Jeff Eayrs.

The Braves have since beaten Great Falls High and are currently 5-0. Flathead is on the road at Missoula Big Sky Friday, October 9 at 7:30.
