Normally students read through their textbooks without actually grasping all the information, but 14 FHS students and government teacher Dan English took learning one step further and spent a week studying numerous issues in the nation’s capital.
“I think it will help a lot next year (in U.S. History),” said sophomore Anna Saverud, “I’ll be prepared because I’ve gotten to experience it (Gettysburg).“
The highlights of the trip were touring memorials, monuments, museums, Capitol Hill, spending an evening at a theater and traveling to the Gettysburg battlefield. One of the memorials that FHS students saw was the Vietnam Wall, where the names of fallen soldiers were engraved.
“I liked the Vietnam Wall the best because of the memorabilia that people left at the wall,” said junior Randy Broadbent. “It made the memorial more personal and real than just reading the names on the wall.”
Students also got to talk to an important man from Montana, Senator Max Baucus. He took time from his busy schedule to talk to the students.
“He took time to shake our hands and talk to us about issues that we were interested in,” said junior Autumn Brown. “It was cool that he was down to earth and sociable.”
Close-Up is usually viewed as just a governmental study, but it also gives the students many fun experiences that they will always remember.
“I had a lot more fun that I thought I’d have during Close-Up,” said junior Treavor Gilbert. “It wasn’t just learn, learn, learn. The leaders were easy-going and I had a really good time.” |
