SPORTS BRIEFS

Bravette swimmers capture first, Braves second

The Flathead High School girls’ swim team won the season’s last home meet on Jan. 9 against the three Missoula schools.

Double first place winners included junior Jen Nerison in the 100m breast stroke and the 200 individual medley and senior Julie Cummings in the 500m freestyle and the 100m back stroke. The Bravettes closed out the 100m breast stroke with the top four finishers: Nerison, senior Kate Crocker, freshman Kaly Hess and senior Becky Henning. The 200m free relay was captured by seniors Danielle Deisenroth, Becca Welling, Henning and Crocker.

“The meet went great for us,” said Deisenroth. “A lot of our swimmers swam their personal best.”

For the boys, the outcome was almost as successful. First place finishers for Flathead were  sophomore Matt Hartmann in the 200m IM, junior Dan di Stefano in the 100m breast and junior Sam Dauenhauer in the 50m free. These firsts, plus seconds by Hartmann in the 100m back and Dauenhauer in the 100m back stroke, clinched the second place slot for the Braves.  Sentinal was the top boys finisher with 309 points, compared to 277 for Flathead.

Four FHS gridders picked for Shrine game in July

Four Flathead High School seniors have been chosen to compete in this summer’s Shrine football game.
The July 24 game in Great Falls will involve players from all over Montana from classes AA to C schools. Joel Robinson (linebacker), Pat Doty (corner), Ron Russell (defensive tackle) and Dylan McFarland (offensive guard) will represent Flathead in the game. All players will practice for 10 days prior to the game.

Grizzlies offer McFarland full ride

Senior Dylan McFarland doesn’t have to worry about the college scholarship game. The University of Montana has offered McFarland a five- year, $8000-a-year scholarship to play football for the Grizzlies.

“They offered me the scholarship last June,” said McFarland. “I looked at all my options. I decided it would be nice to stay close to home.”

McFarland will officially sign on in a letter of intent on Feb. 3.

JV basketball looks for wins

After a slow start in the ‘98-’99 season, the JV basketball team is looking to improve its record, now 1-3. According to coach Grady Bennett, each game was close scoring-wise. Flathead’s single win came from beating the Troy varsity squad.  The Braves fell, however, at the hands of Sentinal, Big Sky and CMR.
