Many students see English teacher David Colburn in the classroom. Some see him dili-gently working at his desk during his free period. Others see him on an occasional jaunt into the halls. But wherever Colburn goes, he is never seen without his fanny pack. For some, the prospect of what is in the ever-present pack has become a mystery. This puzzle prompted The Arrow to do a survey of what students thought Colburn’s fanny pack contains. Here are some of the theories: |
“I think he keeps a stash of cash along with prescribed drugs.”• senior Max Schroeckenstein |
“Knowing him, I don’t know, probably some weird British tea (or) a British dictionary.” •senior Teri Fetterhoff |
I think he has a “wallet, a hanky and women’s clothing.” •junior Kara McChesney |
“I think he carries pens and pencils — he’s got a million of them.” •senior Jason Mitchell |
“It’s like Mary Poppins’ bag: he keeps pulling things out of it. Passes, probably a first-aid kit, a bright yellow convertible, a gold piece from the lower borders of Mongolia, an opera-singing turtle, and a measuring tape.” •senior Janelle Fuller |
“I think it’s full of crumpled up paper or something just to make people think that there’s something important in there.” •senior Doug Luehr |
“Pencils, erasers, staplers, scripts to old Shakespeare plays ... maybe his pills, Tic Tacs, and Kleenex or a handkerchief or something.” •senior Rebecca Henning |

The story behind the pack: |
“I’ve worn it since I had to wear glasses. That’s when it started. I used to keep my glasses and my wallet in my jacket but it wasn’t very reliable. I was always taking it off. It was vulnerable and open to attack ... The one I have now was a Christmas present from Juan Niera.” — David Colburn |
