HELP WANTED:

High school students seek financial aid

Each year seniors scramble as they realize the expenses that come with college, and begin a frantic search for money. To help with the approaching stress, here are a few guidelines in the quest for financial aid.

FAFSA

(Free Application For Federal Student Aid)
What:  Form by the federal government necessary to receive any federal grants, loans or scholarships.
Where: Available in the Career Center.
When: The deadline for the application is March 1.
After sending in your form you receive an EFC card informing you of how much you are expected to pay for college.

Tips on applying for scholarshipss

•Work on a personal resume. Include your activities, community service, leadership experience, employment and academic honors.
•Apply for every scholarship that you are eligible for.
• When filling out  applications, remember to type them.

Most scholarships become available in the spring, but there are always a few exceptions, like the Elks and Walmart scholarships. But others will soon follow, and here are a few to watch for.

HORSMAN FOUNDATION

Amount:  Two students will receive a full­ride scholarship to any college for four years.
Criteria: Local resident with a GPA of 2.5 or higher, based highly upon need.

HAWKINS SCHOLARSHIP

Amount: Worth up to $205,000; last year $110,00 was  awarded.
Criteria:  Local residents with a GPA of 2.5 or higher.

JANETTE AND EDITH ORR FOUNDATION

Amount: Between 30 and 35 students will receive $1,000.
Criteria:  Must be an FHS student with a GPA of 2.5 or higher who has not received another scholarship of $1,000 or more.
