Led by seniors Darcy James and Jodi Hagestad, the FHS girls basketball team exploded for a 22-point third quarter to push past cross-valley rival Columbia Falls 61-43 in the home-opener Sept.. 12. The win was the Bravettesí first on the new gym floor. The Wildkats hung close throughout the first half, and trailed by only four at the break, thanks to aggressive defense and a quick-paced offense. Head coach Dennis Latimer attributed the Wildkatsí strong first half play to their quickness and speed. ìThey showed a lot of tenacity,î said Latimer. The Bravettes widened the gap in the third, when James nailed two shots from behind the arc and junior guard Teri Fetterhoff completed a three-point play after a steal. James led the Bravettes with 19 points, including four 3-pointers. Hagestad added 12, including two field goals taken from the perimeter in the early going. ìItís nice to see her shooting the threes,î said Latimer of James. Flathead opened the season Sept. 5 on the road, defeating Eastern AA opponent Great Falls Russell 70-60 and downing Libby 50-35 the next night. The Bravettes defeated valley rival Whitefish last Thursday 64-38. Flathead opens the season with seven of their first 10 games on the road. ìWe need to take care of the ball better,î said Latimer earlier this week, ìand make the most of every possession.î |
