Like a phoenix, the Bravettes and Braves rose out of the ashes of last week’s tragedy to take first and second place during the Archie Roe track meet on May 9. By having at least one athlete place in the top four in 13 of the 15 individual events, the Bravettes blew away the competition, scoring 90.5 points more than the nearest team, Polson. “We thought that the kids performed exceptionally well considering the circumstances that took place last week,” said Bravette track coach Joe McKay. In what has become the norm for FHS track, the Bravettes dominated the distance events. In the 3,200 Bravettes juniors Hanni Buettner (12:06.36) and Lauren Keithly (12:10.16) brought home the top two spots. In the 1,600, Keithly placed first with a time of 5:37.00. Senior Kari Hill won the 800 in a time of 2:22.70. “We have a really good team and really good distance girls,” said Keithly. “Everybody’s working really hard. The Bravettes were also helped by strong performances by juniors Cecillee Barton, Shalene Liddle in the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles. Barton (15.45 sec.) and Liddle (15.76 sec.) placed first and second in the 100 hurdles and Liddle placed first in the 300 hurdles with a time of 46.25 sec. Seniors Autumn Deda and Lindsey Hopkins placed first and second in their respective events of pole vault and javelin. The Braves finished 34.5 points behind valley rival Whitefish for second place in the meet. The Braves, too were carried by their distance runners. “Our distance events and runners are scoring the majority of our points for us,” said Braves head coach Dan Hodge. “Whitefish has got a terrific track team.” |
