Arrow staff receives regional and national awards

By Blake Thompson

The Arrow staff received the “pacemaker” award from the Montana Interscholastic Editorial Association last week, naming it the best high school newspaper in the state. In addition, Arrow staffers have collected nearly 20 awards from state, regional and national competitions in recent weeks, and were named “best newspaper staff” in the Rockies Journalism Skills Competition.

“I think the class has been successful both on an individual basis and as a group,”  said Arrow adviser Dave Stone. “They run The Arrow like it’s a business and they treat daily decisions with just as much importance as if they personally had money at stake.”

Senior Kathy Domgard placed second in features at MIEA and also in the Rocky Mountain competition, run by Ricks College of Rexburg, Idaho.

“I’ve finally found my niche,” said Domgard, who plans to major in journalism at the University of Montana. “It’s given me the chance to be proud of something that I have done.

Junior Emily Cummings placed first in both spot news and feature photography — and second in sports photography — in the Rockies competition, and second in the MIEA competition.

Junior Jon Black won first in editorial writing in the Rexburg — and second in opinion writing at MIEA.

“I used to think that I would have to be crazy to go into journalism, after seeing how much time is involved,” said Black. “But this class has changed my attitude.”
