Community Problem Solvers clean up at state

By Larissa Marceau

Six high school students, one dog and a classroom full of fourth graders could be a very frightening combination for some people. However, the FHS community problem solvers turned this experience into a first place-entry and a chance to compete in the national competition.

“I felt it has been a worthwhile experience,” said sophomore Michelle Schumacher. “Everyone we gave our presentation to is going to think before they act.”

Community Problem Solvers from around the state have been working since the beginning of the year to come up with a problem and find a way to help solve it. FHS students decided to teach the community about the care required for pets.

“We helped increase responsibility in pet ownership,” said Ed Dickman. “We are trying to start a change for the better and started at the lower grade levels.”

After meeting every Wednesday morning at 7 am, students started their plans for the project in November and started taking action in February and March.

“We were really excited when we finally got it all handed in,” said Atkinson. “It was a lot of work, but now I think we have all the preparing done and we just need to present.”

The rewards for the months of work finally became obvious to members when they were notified on April 21 that they had received first place in the state.

“I was so surprised when I found out we won,” said sophomore Stacie Byrd. “I really didn’t know how our project would compare to everyone else’s across the state, but I was happy to know that our work had paid off.”

Programs like the Community Problem Solvers reward students for helping their city and may be a good way to promote other people to help out as well.

“The program is a great opportunity,” said junior Courtney Jacobson. “It’s important for high school students to make a good example of themselves by showing what they can do to help.”
