Butte’s ugly weather cuts golf meet short, costs Braves possible first place

By Jake Baranek

The Braves golf team was within striking distance of winning on April 24, only two strokes behind Butte, when Mother Nature stepped in and forced the cancellation of the meet in Butte with threats of strong winds and snow.

“Thursday was pretty nice,” said senior Ryan Santa. Friday “it was rainy and it got pretty cold. (The coaches) heard that it was snowing in Anaconda and they thought (snow) would make it there.”

The Braves were led by junior Justin Dorr, Santa, senior Jess Roper, and senior Travis Schule, who had scores of 74, 80, 80 and 81.

“Justin played pretty well,” said Santa. “We thought we could easily win it in the second day.”

As it stands, the meet will not be made up and will go down as a second place finish by the Braves.

“I’m glad that they did cancel it, though,” said Dorr. “It was getting pretty cold.”

The Braves’ next tournament is in Great Falls, Thursday and Friday after press time — a tournament the Braves won last year.

“We won last year so we should win again this year,”  said Dorr. “Billings Senior is pretty good, and we look forward to seeing them at Great Falls.”

The Bravettes did not go unaffected by the weather, either. The girls team finished ninth of the 10 teams at the tournament led by junior Jasmine Gardner, who shot a 92, which was tenth overall.

“The conditions were wet,” said Gardner. “If it hadn’t rained I think that we would have done better.”

Said Gardner of the Bravettes meet at Great Falls:

“The courses in Great Falls are great. I hope to do pretty good.”
