FHS may have four administrators next year

By Paul Wilson

In an attempt to meet state averages, FHS  may hire a new administrator for the 1998-99 school year.

The school district’s budget presentation last month introduced a proposal for a new vice principal, a proposal that according to District 5 Superintendent Alan Hafer would give FHS the average amount of administrators for AA schools in Montana.

“Flathead High is .8 administrator short of the Montana high school average,” said Hafer.

Principal Gary Martin believes that a new administrator would be for the best.

“Most districts with 1,000 to 1,200 have more administrators than we do,” said Martin. “Presently, we try to have one administrator at every evening activity. With another administrator, that would be easier.”

At this point, the duties of the new employee are undetermined, but according to Hafer, Martin and the school will decide what duties the new administrator will take on, Martin even suggested the possibility of a student dean. Because time is short, the new administrator would have to be hired in the next two months.

In order to prepare the new administrator for the 1998-99 school year “we’d probably have to begin the process by the end of March or the beginning of April,” said Hafer.

While some Flathead students believe that a new administrator might be a good idea, others are concerned about the money involved.

“It’s money that could be spent on equipment to educate us,” said junior James Reeves.

“I don’t think we need a new (administrator),” said junior Justin Brakefield. “People get in enough trouble as it is.”

Hafer  believes that despite the district budget problems, a new administrator would be a good move

“Budget problems only exist in kindergarten through eighth grade,” said Hafer. “Three people just don’t have the time to administer to 1,800 students.”
