Montana secretary of state visits FHS government classes

By Larissa Marceau

On March 3, students in Bernard Olson’s first and second period government classes heard Montana secretary of state Mike Cooney discuss  such issues as Native American sovereignty, mining and school funding.

“I really liked what he had to say,” said senior Isaac Lee. “He believed in funding for schools. I agree with him on issues like that.”

Senior Britney Briggs was impressed by the presentation.

“I’m not a big government buff. I wasn’t sure about what he did,” said  Briggs. “But he gave us a good insight on it.”

Cooney discussed  a few of his own high school experiences when he told students that in high school he hadn’t found government to be interesting at all. However, he told them how early he got involved in politics and how interesting he found it after high school.

“I was impressed that he started out really young and just went for it,” said senior Tom Samuel. “He didn’t worry about what was going to happen.”

Olson’s classes learned about Cooney’s job, some big issues occurring in Montana and got an idea who Mike Cooney is.

Said senior Seth Frasier:

“It was neat to meet him close up and realize he was a real person.”
